With coordinates at 51°03′10″N 114°05′09″W, Sunnyside is bounded by Centre Street, 10th Street NW, McHugh Bluff, and the Bow River. The area is well-connected, with major roads like 10th Street NW and Memorial Drive facilitating movement into and out of downtown Calgary. Sunnyside, in partnership with Hillhurst, forms the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Association. Together, they have implemented an area redevelopment plan to shape the community’s growth and maintain its appeal. This includes dealing with the aftermath of events like the Bow River flood of June 2013, which caused significant damage and led to evacuations.

Historical Background

Established in 1904, Sunnyside’s early inhabitants were mostly employees of the Canadian Pacific Railway and Eau Claire Sawmill. It has since evolved to attract urban professionals and their families, offering a serene neighborhood atmosphere just a stone’s throw away from the bustling city center.
