Southwood is a vibrant residential neighborhood nestled in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. Established in 1960, the community has flourished over the decades, creating a welcoming environment for its residents.

Accessibility and Transportation

The community benefits from excellent transportation links, with the Southland and Anderson stations of the C-Train LRT system serving the area. Southland Drive runs through the northern part of Southwood, and Elbow Drive bisects the community, providing easy access to various parts of Calgary. Additionally, Southcentre Mall is conveniently located to the east of the neighborhood.

Demographics

According to the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, Southwood had a population of 6,085, living in 2,658 dwellings—a 2% increase from its 2011 population of 5,965. The community spans a land area of 2.7 km2 (1.0 sq mi), resulting in a population density of 2,250/km2 (5,840/sq mi).

The median household income in Southwood was $51,409 in 2000, with 14% of residents classified as low income. The community is culturally diverse, with 18.8% of residents being immigrants as of 2000. In terms of housing, 21% of buildings were condominiums or apartments, and a significant 42.4% of housing was used for renting.

Education

Southwood is well-served educationally, with several public schools including Ethel M. Johnson Elementary, Harold Panabaker Junior High, and Foundations For the Future Elementary. Additionally, St. Stephen Elementary & Junior High (Catholic) caters to those seeking a faith-based education. The community also hosts a branch of the Calgary Public Library, located near Southland Drive and Elbow Drive.
