Renfrew is a vibrant residential neighbourhood nestled in the northeast quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. This community boasts a rich history and a welcoming atmosphere, making it a great place for families and individuals alike.

Location

Renfrew is strategically located south of the Trans-Canada Highway and north of the inner city community of Bridgeland. Its geographical coordinates are 51°03′44″N latitude and 114°02′25″W longitude. The neighbourhood is bordered by Nose Hill Creek and Deerfoot Trail to the east, and it is separated from Crescent Heights by Edmonton Trail to the west. The community spans an area of 1.5 km² (0.6 sq mi) and sits at an elevation of 1,070 m (3,510 ft).

Demographics

As of the 2006 census, Renfrew had a population of 5,629, with a median household income of $47,692. The community has seen steady growth, with a 3.1% increase in population from 2011 to 2012. It boasts a population density of 2,170/km² (5,610/sq mi).

Residents enjoy a diverse community, with 18.4% of residents being immigrants as of 2000. The neighbourhood has a mix of housing options, with 38.5% of buildings being condominiums or apartments, and 40.9% of housing used for renting.

History

Renfrew’s history is rich and varied, with visible signs of its Slavic origin found in the Ukrainian Pioneer Park and two Ukrainian churches (one Catholic and one Orthodox) located in close proximity. A monument to victims of genocide in Ukraine also stands along the banks of the Bow River in the adjacent community of Bridgeland.

The area was originally home to a Royal Canadian Air Force training base and airfield during the Second World War, serving also as the Calgary airport. The airport’s relocation paved the way for residential development in the 1940s.

Community and Lifestyle

Today, Renfrew is known for its small businesses located along Edmonton Trail and 16th Avenue, providing residents with convenient shopping and dining options. While there are no major commercial or industrial facilities, the community does house several physicians’ offices and a treatment facility run by the Alberta Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Commission.

In 2014, Avenue Magazine recognized Renfrew’s charm and community spirit, ranking it #22 on their “50 Best Neighbourhoods” list.
