Midnapore is a vibrant residential community located within the City of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Positioned at 50°54′56″N 114°03′22″W, the neighborhood is bounded by Fish Creek Provincial Park to the north and east, Sun Valley Boulevard to the south, and Macleod Trail to the west. Midnapore was established in 1977, following its annexation by the City of Calgary on December 30, 1961.

History

Prior to becoming part of Calgary, Midnapore existed as an unincorporated hamlet, under the jurisdiction of the Municipal District of Turner Valley No. 32. Since its annexation, it has transformed into a thriving community, retaining its historical charm while embracing modern amenities.

Amenities and Lifestyle

Midnapore offers a wide array of amenities to its residents, including a shopping mall (Midnapore Mall), numerous fast-food restaurants, and a community centre (Mid-Sun Community Association) shared with the adjacent community of Sundance. The neighborhood is also home to a man-made lake, utilized for water sports in the summer and ice activities in the winter.

The community’s proximity to Fish Creek Provincial Park provides residents with easy access to natural landscapes, and it is not uncommon to encounter wildlife within the area. Additionally, Midnapore boasts a diverse business section, including real estate offices, a Tri-Services station, educational institutions, and various other facilities.

Education

Midnapore is served by several schools, catering to different educational needs. These include Midnapore Elementary, Fish Creek Elementary, Mother Teresa of Calcutta Elementary, Father James Whelihan Elementary and Junior High, Midsun Junior High School, and Trinity Christian School.

Lake and Outdoor Activities

The community lake is a central feature of Midnapore, offering 12 hectares of recreational space. The lake was created in 1976, and today it serves as a hub for both summer and winter outdoor activities. Homeowners in the community contribute to the maintenance of the lake through encumbrances on their property.

Demographics

According to the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, Midnapore had a population of 6,861, residing in 2,726 dwellings. This represented a slight decrease from the 2011 population of 6,888. The neighborhood had a population density of 2,370/km² (6,130/sq mi) in 2012.

Residents in Midnapore had a median household income of $62,067 in 2000, with 10% of the population considered low income. Approximately 12.3% of the residents were immigrants, and the housing market consisted of a mix of condominiums, apartments, and single-family homes.
