Highwood is a charming residential neighborhood nestled in the northwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. Established in 1954, it has developed into a welcoming community with a variety of amenities for its residents.

Location and Boundaries

Strategically located, Highwood is bordered by McKnight Boulevard to the north, 4 Street W to the east, 40 Avenue N to the south, and John Laurie Boulevard to the west. The neighborhood enjoys close proximity to Nose Hill Park, one of Calgary’s prominent green spaces.

Demographics

According to the 2012 municipal census, Highwood’s population stood at 2,214, residing in 993 dwellings. This represented a 5.5% increase from its 2011 population of 2,098. Covering a land area of 0.9 km² (0.35 sq mi), the neighborhood had a population density of 2,460/km² (6,400/sq mi).

Residents of Highwood had a median household income of $57,663 in 2000. 7.3% of the community’s residents were classified as low income. As of the year 2000, 15.2% of Highwood’s inhabitants were immigrants. In terms of housing, 20.3% of the buildings were condominiums or apartments, and 30.1% of all housing was used for renting.

Education

Highwood benefits from access to educational facilities within its vicinity. The community is served by Colonel Irvine Junior High, which offers public English education for grades 7-9 and a Mandarin bilingual program for grades 5-9. Additionally, Highwood Elementary provides a Mandarin bilingual program for kindergarten through fourth grade.
