Haysboro, a vibrant residential neighbourhood in Calgary’s southwest quadrant, is a community with a rich history and a diverse population. From its establishment in the late 1950s to its present-day status, Haysboro has become a sought-after area for families and individuals alike.

Location and Geography

Bordered by Heritage Drive to the north, Macleod Trail to the east, 98th Avenue to the south, and 14 Street W alongside the Glenmore Reservoir to the west, Haysboro spans an area of 2.9 km² (1.1 sq mi). It sits at an elevation of 1,060 m (3,480 ft), with Elbow Drive bisecting the community.

Historical Context

Originally a dairy farm owned by Harry Hays—a future Mayor of Calgary, Member of Parliament, and Senator—the land was annexed by the City of Calgary in 1956. Haysboro was officially established in 1958, and just a year later, Harry Hays sold the land to fund his mayoral campaign.

Demographic Profile

As of the 2012 municipal census, Haysboro housed 6,943 residents living in 3,637 dwellings—a 3.3% increase from 2011. The neighbourhood’s population density was 2,570/km² (6,660/sq mi).

The median household income in Haysboro was $52,261 in 2000, with 10.4% of residents classified as low income. Immigrants constituted 19.3% of the population, showcasing the community’s diversity. In terms of housing, 33.5% of the buildings were condominiums or apartments, and 23.9% of the housing was used for renting.

Educational Institutions

Haysboro serves its residents with various educational options including Akiva Academy, Haysboro Elementary, and Woodman Junior High public schools. Additionally, the STEM Innovation Academy and Our Lady of the Rockies High School provide Catholic education options. The community also features Eugene Coste Elementary, a Spanish immersion school.
