Nestled in the northwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, the Hamptons is a picturesque residential neighbourhood known for its affluence, family-friendly atmosphere, and abundance of amenities.

Geographic Location

The neighbourhood enjoys a prime location, being close to the northern edge of Calgary. It is enclosed by Stoney Trail to the north, Shaganappi Trail to the east, Country Hills Boulevard to the south, and Sarcee Trail to the west.

Historical Context

The land on which the Hamptons now stands was annexed to the city in two phases: the southern portion in 1976 and the northern section in 1989. It was officially established as a neighbourhood in 1990, making it relatively new compared to other communities in the city.

Community Features

Spanning across an area of 2.5 km² (1.0 sq mi) and sitting at an elevation of 1,245 m (4,085 ft), the Hamptons is home to around 8,175 residents (as of 2006). The neighbourhood stands out with its Olympic size hockey rink and its festive annual Stampede breakfast, providing recreational and social opportunities for residents of all ages.

Demographics

As of the 2012 municipal census, the population of the Hamptons was recorded at 7,905, living in 2,471 dwellings. This marked a slight 0.8% increase from the previous year. The area enjoys a high population density of 2,260/km² (5,850/sq mi).

When it comes to income, residents in this neighbourhood are relatively well-off, with a median household income of $125,042 reported in 2005. Despite this affluence, 5.6% of the population lives in low income households. The neighbourhood also has a diverse demographic, with 44.9% immigrants as of 2005. Housing is predominantly single detached homes, making up 84.6% of all occupied private dwellings in 2006, and only a small fraction (2.3%) of these homes were rented.

Education

The educational needs of the community are well-catered for, with the Hamptons School serving kindergarten to fourth-grade students. For grades 5-6, children move on to Captain John Palliser Elementary, and then to Tom Baines School for junior high (grades 7-9). High school students typically attend Sir Winston Churchill High School for grades 10-12.
