Located in the southwest quadrant of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Bayview is a small yet picturesque residential area characterized by its exclusive position on a peninsula along the southern shore of the Glenmore Reservoir. Established in 1967, the community represents the epitome of suburban living with a touch of luxury.
Location and Government
Bayview falls under the jurisdiction of Ward 11 in the Calgary City Council and is represented by Councillor Kourtney Branagan. The administrative body overseeing the community is the Calgary City Council, led by Mayor Jyoti Gondek.
Historical Background
The neighbourhood’s development can be traced back to Alcan Design Homes, a subsidiary of Alcan. Special attention was given to the design and aesthetics of the houses, with all homes initially designed by Alcan. Interior decoration assistance was also provided to buyers by Shirley C. Ireland of Colleen Interiors. The first lot, situated at 1924 Bay Shore, was sold to Bill Dickie, and homes were ready for occupancy by January 1968. The dominant architectural style of the area is American Colonial, though variations including Spanish, Tudor, and Modern homes can also be found. Notably, all houses feature front garages, and the community lacks laneways.
Demographics and Affluence
According to the City of Calgary’s 2012 municipal census, Bayview experienced a 5.2% increase in population from its 2011 figure, boasting 682 residents living in 249 dwellings. With a land area of 0.4 km², the neighbourhood had a population density of 1,710/km² as of 2012. The community stands out for its affluence; in 2000, it recorded the highest median household income in the city at $184,383. Furthermore, 15.1% of residents were immigrants as of 2000, and the housing predominantly consists of single-family detached homes.
Education
While the community itself does not house any educational institutions, it is well-served by nearby schools. These include Nellie McClung Elementary and John Ware Junior High public schools, as well as St. Benedict Elementary Catholic school.
Commercial Amenities
For shopping and retail needs, residents have convenient access to the Glenmore Landing strip mall shopping centre. Located off the southeast corner of the Bayview community, it serves as the closest retail operation.
